Keeping Your Plan Up to Date

This time of year usually has us thinking about our clients' Legal Life PlansTM—whether they came to see us in the past year, or a decade ago. So many things can change in a year (or ten, or more): family situations like marriage or death, health changes for you, your spouse, or your executor, and legislative and legal changes to estate laws and/or taxes. That's a lot for one person to keep track of! And that's why we're thinking about YOU.

Family changes, from exciting things like births, marriages, and new homes, to life's more difficult events like divorces, deaths, health status or illness, and other losses, lives change on many levels. This impacts your plan's effectiveness and application. If you or your spouse have new health issues, you'll want to address that. If your beneficiaries have married, divorced, remarried, or other, you may want to update your gifts. We know that going through those events can be overwhelming enough and the last thing you think about is changing or updating your current plan.

It's not just your life and immediate family whose changes affect your plan. If there are any changes for those you've trusted as executors or even beneficiaries, your plan needs to be updated. For example, you've entrusted your brother-in-law, an attorney, as the executor of your estate. But this past year, he's been diagnosed with a serious illness. He won't be able to act as your executor anymore. You'll need to make some updates to your plan. Again, this may be far from your mind as you support him and your other family members through this tough time.

Because your personal things aren't enough to keep track of, laws around estate plans and taxes are always changing. And with a new administration in place, there are more changes to come in 2017 and beyond. What you need is a team of experts to keep track of all these changes and let you know if any of them apply to you.
