Veterans Day 2014

Veterans Day 2014

Soldier with FlagI was reminded of General Colin Powell the other day. He has been misquoted many times regarding the role of the United States of America's military in the world.

The quote that is often mistated or incorrectly attributed occured during a presentation to the World Economic Forum in Switzerland in January, 2003.

The former Archbishop, George Carey asked Powell if the U.S. was relying too much on "hard power" such as military action as compared to "soft power" which tends to appeal to the common values of most major religions and the trust that develops based on those values.

Powell affirmed the value of "soft power" but further stated it was the "hard power" of the military that, for example, helped free Europe so the "soft power" of peace and reconstruction could take place.

Powell then said, "We have gone forth from our shores repeatedly over the last hundred years and we’ve done this as recently as the last year in Afghanistan and put wonderful young men and women at risk, many of whom have lost their lives, and we have asked for nothing except enough ground to bury them in, and otherwise we have returned home to seek our own, you know, to seek our own lives in peace, to live our own lives in peace. But there comes a time when soft power or talking with evil will not work where, unfortunately, hard power is the only thing that works."

On this Veterans Day 2014 we wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who have served our nation. We love our veterans.

To the families of those who have given all for country and are now without their companionship, we would echo the sentiment of President Abraham Lincoln in the famous "Bixby" letter.

"I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom."

Happy Veterans Day from Idaho Estate Planning and may God Bless the United States of America.
